Another Adventure

It's amazing what our cat Roxanne can manage to 'pull out of the hat'. I never feed her, she has the other members of the household doing that at a flick of a tail. However, I was coerced to giving her a few 'crumbles' on my birthday, and was told 'you might get a surprise'. So with some reluctance I fed the cat. No surprise arrived, so once again I thought I'd been duped.

However on the evening of my birthday, I was presented with an envelope and tickets and accommodation for a week in Thailand - including a partner! Luckily I did not have to think to deeply about that and David and I leave for Thailand on Saturday. I will update with photos and chat when we are there.

In the meantime we are enjoying the quiet of Rose Cottage before the onslaught of Bangkok.

As always our time in the Masai Mara was spectacular. We flew over the Mara River to land at the Kichwa Tembo landing strip. The savannah opened before us and we were certain once more that a special time awaited.

On our first early evening drive we encountered two leopards mating. An unusual and remarkable sighting. This was the beginning of another Masai Mara week. On our first morning out we witnessed a wildebeest crossing which lasted about 45 minutes. With waves of animals crashing down the river banks the photographers were able to capture some special images.

Benson our ranger,who's eagle eyes pick out the smallest creature, sfforded us wonderful sightings. From jackal pups to hyena cubs, several pride of lion with cubs and mating couples, we were fortunate indeed.

The weather was overcast and cool, but we had good light and great comeraderie. the staff at Kichwa Tembo were helpful and accommodating. The food was as delicious as ever and we already look forward to our 2012 tour from 8 - 15 September.

Masai Mara 2011

We cannot believe that we are once again off to the Masai Mara. This is one of our favourite tours of the year and each year we visit gives us a different experience.

This is our seventh year in the Mara. Even though we leave Johannesburg at the unmentionable time of 12:20 [after midnight] we have the anticipation of our friends in Kenya again. We love flying over the vast savannah plains into the Masai Mara and enjoy the element of surprise that every day brings.

We look forward to the rumble of thunder in the late afternoons as we drive back home. The skies black will rolling clouds hold such promise for both creatures, land and photographers.

Our group is small this year and we have the pleasure of meeting our guests [from Australia] in Nairobi. Longtime supporters of Creative Escapes, we will no doubt have a great reunion.

Once again, after our trip to the Mara, we venture further afield to the ancient land of Abyssinia, now Ethiopia. We explore the ancient cities of Lalibela and Axum and David will be in his element evaluating new and intriguing scenes.

I will certainly update the FaceBook pages as and when I can, otherwise images will be uploaded on our return.

Once again David and I raced to to the Eastern Free State firstly to take supplies down to Rose Cottage, but luckily snow had fallen in Lesotho and it was simply too good an opportunity to miss more photographic opportunities.

Rose Cottage waited for us and we enjoyed the snug fire where we 'picniced' for all our meals. We were at the border before dawn and sailed through without a problem. The drive to the Mala Bamatso River was breath taking as we curved higher and higher into the snowline. Frozen waterfalls fringed the road and drifts of snow covered the mountains.

David as ever took some beautiful images. The ones you see below are mine, but never the less give a good impression of the great day we had in Lesotho.

July Frigid WInter Weekend - Fouriesburg and Lesotho

Once again the weather played its part. With the remarkable summer rains, Lesotho's waterfalls turned to ice for the Creative Escapes photographers.

Early mornings are biting cold and 'cold to the bone' is a term that is well understood by the photographers this past weekend.

With warm welcomes on return and hot soup and tasty stews in the evening, the group felt that the cheek biting weather was worth the effort.

We donned our Antarctic gear and with good wind breakers, ruffs and 'long-johns' we braved the chill to enjoy superb photographic opportunities.

The images David captured were exceptional and certainly made the early morning trek into Lesotho more than worth while.

The Netherlands and France

We enjoy travel. That's a fact. But of course travel is not for the fainthearted.
When we planned our trip to Europe we chose to visit just two countries and not the 'if it's Tuesday it must be Belgium' tour.

At Keukenhof

We had visited both countries before and with David;s long standing love of photography we of course now have a different 'focus'. Keukenhof was all we expected and the paths and flow of flowers appeared to last forever. David's images capture the colours and form and can be seen on our website. We met friends from Antarctica there and spent many hours reminiscing and sharing good food, quaffing the beer and of course, taking photographs of windmills, canals and tulips.

France was another great experience where we hopped on and off buses to view Paris at her sparkling best. We stayed with American-British friends of ours, Dan and Zara. We traveled from Giverny to Chartres while in Paris and enjoyed the efficient public transport. We then boarded a train to the Dordogne area where we stayed with friends in a gem of village called Carloux. We met Harry in Namibia and he invited us to stay with he and his wife Susan to explore the surrounding countryside. We climbed stairs, padded along cloisters and shared breath taking view sites.

In our European travels we were fortunate with weather, good photographic opportunities, good food and friendship.

Cosmos Weekend - March 2011

The Eastern Free State is blooming - with beautiful cosmos fields!

We thought we were going to be disappointed, but once again we were delighted by the cosmos fields. Mostly white this year, the flowers curled, swirled and swayed as photographers donned water boots and plodded through fields, stood on car roofs and simply had fun in ideal weather conditions!

The writers sat quietly learning how to craft, pare down and scene write. Richard and Jo-Anne [an amusing song and dance team] took us through the finer points of writing from idea to finished piece.

A new aspect of the weekend is that each photographer has been requested to send four of their favourite [worked] images to us to be added to our blog and website. Of course the writers will do the same.

The group that joined David and Fred had a great morning discussing photos and writing. Challenging images and thoughts were given to participants and with homework set to be sent before the final morning students were challenged to extend their repertoires.

This image of the Taj Mahal by David evoked much interactive discussion.

A few facts: Built by Shah Jahan for his beloved wife after her death. The monument was built over a period of twenty two years by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan from 1630 for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal after her death in childbirth.

February Day Workshop

It is always exciting to meet new photographers. In our first workshop of the year we met some keen photographer, people with new cameras and new enthusiasm for a new found hobby!

David's presentations included evaluation of light, understanding exposure and introduction to Photoshop. Of course creativity was a focus and as that is one of David's passions.

As always Helen served a delicious meal and wine from several vineyards was enjoyed.

The day was intense and rewarding. The next Creative Escapes weekend is Cosmos in March in the Eastern Free State. We hope to see you there.

Fouriesburg & Lesotho January 2011

It is always a pleasure visiting the Eastern Free and after the magnificent Summer rains our mid-January journey was a real treat. David and I have just returned from a wonderful 'sight-seeing' weekend in the eastern Free State and Lesotho. Our cottage in Fouriesburg looks grand with the garden green, roses in full bloom and white Michelmas daisies making a wonderful show. Rose Cottage welcomed us as we enjoyed another cosy, relaxing time there.

David of course was determined to go into Lesotho if the weather held and somehow the rain skirted Fouriesburg and the skies were clear on Saturday. An early morning start had us at the border before opening and being first in the queue was a pleasure. With skies clear and the air crisp we drove through villages and were in awe of the exquisite mountains covered in an emerald sheen, with ribbon waterfalls cascading at almost every turn.

Waterfalls usually iced in winter, dropped meters onto the valleys below and created magnificent images for the avid photographer. David stopped at every opportunity as we climbed to Oxbow. Greeting shepherd and driver alike all of whom were thrilled by the beauty surrounding us.

What is exciting is that with all the rains, there will surely be large patches of cosmos [some already blooming along the highway] for the Creative Escapes weekend in March. Faint tinges of yellow tip the poplars, as they prepare for the autumn weekend in April and of course, with the magnificent amount of water, there will surely be spectacular iced waterfalls for July.

Thinking of planning a great weekend away? Remember that Fouriesburg is only a three hour drive from Johannesburg and not much more from Natal. Treat yourself to a relaxing and creative weekend whether it be photography or creative writing with Creative Escapes, where the Eastern Free State awaits.

Weekend Away - Dullstroom

We have such fun planning exploratory weekends away.

This past weekend we went to a small trout farm called Willowcreek. Off the Roosenekal - Lydenburg road, we chose Loeries Loft a delightful wooden cottage with four bedrooms [two en suite and two downstairs - sharing a bathroom] as our weekend abode. The lounge, diningroom, kitchen is open plan with great facilities.

The log cabin overlooks a trout dam and although we didn't fish, we could certainly see fish rising in the evening. We viewed beautiful sunsets and exquisite sunrises. Two other cottages are available to rent and they look just as pleasant.

I spent a great deal of the weekend reading and enjoying the surrounding calm. David of course spent the weekend photographing anything from waterfalls, zantedeshcias [yellow arums only found in November in the area] in rocks and of course the mist. It rained, the sun shone and it rained. But all good for the photographer.

We had a good meal at a small restaurant in Dullstroom and a very indifferent coffee and scones at another on the Monday on our way home.

Once again we met interesting people, from land owners, to furniture manufacturers to farm workers and cattle farmers all who went out of their way to assist David in his quest for the perfect image.

I'm always delighted when our daughter Elizabeth, updates our website. We have our website as our 'default page' so we view it as we open up the 'web' see our site. When we have new pics and articles it's rather fun!

Please go into the site to view our 2011 workshops, weekends and tour, plus some itineraries. Of course we also add new photos for interest. Here is one of David and I communing with the penguins in Antarctica. Thank goodness for 'time exposures'.

We had a great launch of the 2011 programme at the Rand Club. Together with Allaboutwriting we had over 100 guests which added to the atmosphere of the evening.

First Sighting and Adamaster were some of the delectable wines tasted in the magnificent bar before the presentations.

Once we were seated Richard and Jo-Anne discussed the merits and challenges readers and publishers face now due to the ease of purchase and possible pirating of already published works. Fascinating thoughts to ponder,

David and I presented the 2011 programme and several other short audio visuals which included Antarctica, the Tango and a cheetah hunt in the Masai Mara.

It was wonderful to meet old friends who have supported Creative Escapes for many years. Hopefully 2011 will be another exciting travel year.

2011 Launch 2 November

Rand Club Launch

Creative Escapes is joining forces with the exceptional Allaboutwriting group as we launch our 2011 course schedules.

The launch will be held at the Rand Club on November 2. Jo-Anne and Richard will expatiate briefly on the new challenges facing writers in this second decade of what is quickly becoming a tarnished century. That, at least, is the title of the talk: how they interpret it will depend on their conversations over the next month!

David will present the Creative Escapes 2010 overview and 2011 programme as well as some audio visuals from The South Pole to the Equator, to Lands end in Africa and back again.

We have sent out invitations and if you haven't yet received one please let us know.

This will give us an opportunity to visit the historic club (again, perhaps), enjoy a glass or two of wine (a free tasting!), and satisfy the inner man or woman, with a little soup and a selection of club sandwiches.

Of course, ladies, we no longer have to creep up the back stairs and can walk into the club elegantly and with heads held high!

We look forward to meeting you at this special occasion.

Looking back......

Looking back on previous posts and once we were once more 'on the road' I see that I have written nothing since George's remarkable surprise lunch in the garden.

We continued to have a wonderful time in the Mara with many more surprises: hail in the Mara, torrential rain in the Mara and freezing mornings - all of these weather patterns did nothing to deter our continued enjoyment at being there.

In fact the women I have been working with visited me at the camp on a beautiful afternoon - just after our lunch. We, together with Julius our fantastic go-between, had a most pleasant time sitting and trying to establish some plans for the future.

Ready for a game David and the others called me and so we prepared to leave. Seeing the torrid skies we invited the women to get onto our truck so that we could take them to the village. With rain pouring down and hail stones nipping our skins the women called a halt. Climbed off and sat under a tree which they felt gave them more protection. We beat a hasty retreat back to camp where I managed to have a hot shower and dry off. My Masai women had no such luxury.

We left in great weather, surrounded by good friends and fabulous memories for our next destination Lake Nakuru!

Lunch in the Garden

There is a well planted 'shamba' at the back of the lodge and we were invited to visit it just before lunch yesterday.

George, the chef, is justifiably proud of the garden. Situated at the back of the lodge it is accessible through a courtyard, the backyard, the village workshop, the garages and the church. Quite a trek to get there and when George suggested we visit we were thrilled.

it is well hidden behind a high wire fence which is meant to keep all manner of creature away although of course, elephants think nothing of toeing the fence and the monkeys laugh in the face of anything except William the gardner who sternly throws sticks to keep them out.

Planted in tiers and stages George makes sure that enough 'salad' greens are available to service the needs of the guests.

As we marveled at the fresh vegetables, George informed us that few people knew that a table could be set in the shamba for 'private' functions. Under the avocado tree a beautiful table was set for guests. Red and white roses in a crystal vase, red rose petals lay on the table and a braai in the background cooking beef fillet kebabs and prawns on skewers with grilled vegetables [from the garden] all waiting to be consumed.

George with a flourish waved his hand and said 'this is for you and David mama, for being with us again'! Well I did my usual 'driz' and we sat down for a delightful meal of hummus pate on homemade bread, fresh salad, fillet and prawn kebabs and gilled veggies and delicious macadamia nut torte. Kenyan coffee ended the superb occasion.

As we strolled back to the lodge through the shamba and village we met up with a family of warthogs with four of the tiniest 'wind-up size' babies we had seen. A wonderful ending to our stay.

There's More to the Mara than Crossings

We have as always had the most special time in the Mara. Guests have captured amazing images and we have all shared wonderful times in the bush.

Yesterday we glimpsed a leopard and her cub frolicking [I use the term deliberately] in the scrub near Kichwa. We then drove through the plains and came across a cheetah that has taken up residence in the open areas in front of the camp. A young male, who had eaten most comfortably over the past few days, was hungry and ready to hunt. We watched the whole event with bated breath and much trepidation. The baby gazelle jigging through the veldt and the cheetah waiting his time.

The little one advanced as the cheetah waited with infinite patience. Gazelle lies in a hollow in the grass. Cheetah advances in frozen steps. Cheetah like an elastic band shoots through the bush . Dust. Zig-zags. Dust. No gazelle. No kill. A very puffed cheetah. 1 to the Gazelles, 0 to the Cheetahs and 100% to the photographers who captured the most spectacular photographs.
We never saw the baby gazelle again and think he must have taken a matatu to Nairobi.

We left the cheetah lying in the open surely thinking of missed opportunities. We have a lesson to learn from this. A cheetah misses 9 out of 10 kill attempts. Still manages to get up and try again and again. Thoughts to apply to our own lives perhaps?

Of Meetings and Weddings

Sitting under the trees with Julius [on a stool] and the women surrounding us, we had a great discussion about their talents as beaders and sense of colour.

While we were chatting [with Julius as translator] once of my friends answered her mobile [yes, we all have one in the Mara] with a 'Karibou' - 'welcome'. A new bride was arriving with a welcoming party and suddenly I was involved in a Maasai wedding! I was bedecked with beads and was immediately drawn into the women's welcoming party. The bride, surrounded by her greeters and the rest of the women in the village walked as slowly as she dared, eyed down and looking very solum. Each time she stopped the women called out 'we will give you a cow' and a step forward was taken. As she stopped from time to time throughout the walk to the entrance of the manyatta the same call was chanted 'we will give you a cow'. However a few times the call was 'we will give you a goat', with much laughter from everyone except the bride. She became even more reluctant to enter her new abode and took two steps back.

After much stopping and starting the bride reached the entrance to her new home and great ululations were trilled. I was escorted to meet the young woman who shyly dipped her head and stooped through the archway to her new home.

The men slaughtered three goats under the trees where women are not permitted and where only men are allowed to eat the juiciest portion of meat. Those being 'taboo' for the woman. We [Julius, I and the driver Daniel] were graciously given three portions of meat which was collected by Julius while I remained in the vehicle. You can imagine how, I as a non-meat eater I felt at the honour!

I certainly learned again the value of being a woman and where my place is. What a wonderful experience. Badai [till later] must see the Masai dancers in about 30 minutes and cheer on the highest jumper!

Village Visit

Some of you may know that we visit the same village annually. I have also been planning to visit the women with thoughts and ideas of how to work together so that their incredible talent for beading can be directed and used in another way.

Julius, the community worker at Kichwa and I were given a meeting one morning. The women gathered under the trees with the two of us - ceremoniously perched on all too small stools with the women comfortably sitting on the ground around us.

We discussed business principles and once they have agreed to procedure I will let you know how we will go forward.

Second Home??

Arriving back in Kenya is like returning home. The airport is familiar, the customs officials as grumpy as anywhere else in the world - especially if you have enough camera equipment to open a store or look like the official BBC team.

Even after the flight [which leaves at 12:40 in the morning] which is short but at a crazy hour - the breakfast shared with our friend George Gituku from Custom Safaris was welcome and friendly and made up for any subversive customs attention.

We had a short transfer to Wilson airport and no sooner that we arrived there than we were put onto the Dash for Kichwa,

Our friends were on the runway to welcome us with a delicious punch and open arms.

David. Tokkie and Frans have taken some amazing photographs, with our first crossing on arrival!

of Farewells and Preparation

As always just before a tour there are moments of panic - trying to recall that everything has been planned and confirmed - and then more concern that all the day to day running of house and home will continue without hitch. So family members are briefed and staff know exactly how to continue.

We always have a Sunday family lunch and today was no exception. Family enjoyed a roast with veggies and pud and we toasted the Mara and all that we hope to see there. of course we look forward to meeting our friends and re-establishing our friendships.

We arrive in Nairobi next Saturday in time for breakfast and leave for the Mara from Wilson airport at 10h00. We hope to keep you updated on our tour. We go to the Mara for a week and then onto Lake Nakuru, Ol Pajito and Samburu.

The phone rings, the interviewer introduces herself and you and before your know it your voice enters the airways and away you go.

Questions pepper the air, you respond - and think, did I really say that? Did it make sense? Did I talk about the Mara, did I mention the wildebeest and the tents - were they luxurious or comfortable?

Yes to all I am told. The interview is done. Let's hope the people respond.

Only two weeks till we see our friends in Kenya again.

As always, if it weren't for the people there would be no tours. Here are a few 'shots' of our guests in Lesotho and Fouriesburg on the July Snow & Ice Creative Escapes weekend. From the icy chill in Lesotho to the warm conviviality of Fouriesburg everyone had a great time.

July Ice and snow weekend

Well, I obviously did not do a wild enough snow dance to call up snow, but ice, clear skies and frozen water were what nature presented for us over the weekend.

We began the weekend with a dinner on Friday night and a few of David's audio visuals began the weekend in a convivial way. The 'AV's' included beautiful images of icebergs in Antarctica, the Tango dancers in Buenos Aires and exquisite images of ice and snow from a trip David did into Lesotho to find the best photographic spots.

An early morning start on Saturday found us at the border for an easy transition into Lesotho. The drive up the mountains in the early morning light is always spectacular and the sun clipping the tops of the mountains is a magnificent start to the day, even at that early hour.

We arrived at the Malibamatso River in time to capture beautiful early morning photographs of sun reflections and icy streams. Breakfast picnic packs were warmly welcomed and we enjoyed sitting in the sun at the bridge near Oxbow.

Photographers continued their enjoyment throughout the morning and shared another picnic pack at lunchtime. The afternoon was left free to meander home in the late afternoon. This was in time to share another delicious meal and much sharing of 'photo tips and locations'.

Another early morning start was in store for Sunday with the group walking to the Sangoma Cave which is the biggest overhang in the Southern Hemisphere. Here sangomas are taught by elders the skills of divining and healing. Special photo journalist shots were captured with the sangomas as most co-operative models.

The weekend ended with a brunch where tired but contented guests shared final conversations and all agreed that this was a special weekend indeed.

We love to travel to the Free State and Rose Cottage enjoying the variations of season and scenes.

This past weekend seemed to be the coldest we have ever experienced. With temperatures below zero at -8. With the windchill factor it was extremely cold in Lesotho with David's fingers almost freezing on the camera.

Isn't it strange that even if it's your own home, it is sometimes so cold that nothing but a hot bath and a hot blanket and coffee laced with brandy helps.

We look forward to the July weekend - and even hope for snow to add to the exquisite frozen streams and waterfalls.

It is most interesting [and true] that you never know who reads the blog. I had a mail from a friend who lives in Denmark [and Holland] who happens to originate from New Zealand - whose family in turn must have originated from 'over the waters' some few years ago.

Mori wrote about spring in Scandinavia - collecting cloudberries and preparing for a kayaking trip later in their summer. While I write this, my two little granddaughters potter around and I watch leaves fall off the pinoaks thinking of the winter to come.

While I think instant communication is great, I think I miss the letter opening and quite moments of settling down to read what some else had hand written. But one thing is sure, hearing from friends from all over the world is the bonus.

David is sorting the many. many images taken over the years - there are too many for him ever to get through them all - and they are really great.

I am about to take the little girls out to have a 'cappucino' and cake and will wrap them up warmly.

Cannot believe we are onto our Autumn workshop in the Free State this weekend.

We have a great small group and hope that the trees are looking good.

Some new photographers join us this time and I am sure that they will be totally convinced that photography is a great hobby.

Before we new it we were back home and into our every day routines.

I teaching and David doing the daily surgery run.

On Sunday we held [by request] our first beginner's workshop of 2010 and fourteen photographers joined us for the day. A great time was had by all, especially by the new photographers who were delighted by David's images and thoughts on taking pictures.

Our first weekend away is in March with floral photography and water being the focus.

Of Shopping Malls and Choices

I walked into one of the shopping centres in Johannesburg over the weekend and commented to David that although 'very posh' and with wonderful stores it is no competition for the centre we visited in Buenos Aires.

As our driver whizzed us through the beautiful boulevards, we were rather alarmed and wondered where we were going. He stopped outside the Principe Mall which is one of the nicest shopping areas I've visited for a long time.

Wide passages, shops with no 'Made in China' labels - please don't tell me everything has to be made in China! Shoe shops with high heel shoes in every colour, flat shoes with soft leather, sandals with straps in just the right place.

Coffee and food shops in just the right places and of course chocolate shops. One 'boutique' store simply sold small soaps and candles that looked good enough to eat. Great for small gifts.

Even the men's clothing stores beckoned David who actually slowed down to gaze at the well tailored smart and casual clothing.

So, I sit now and gaze onto the emerald green grass of our garden with the sun streaming through the leaves of the pinoaks and ponder on the remarkable experiences we've had over the past few weeks.

I don't have the 'ice bug' that so many of the Zodiac drivers and expedition leaders have - too much of a Bush person for that - but I certainly would certainly like to explore the Northern Arctic areas for another experience. And what about the Ross Ice Shelf? Now THAT'S a thought!

But Buenos Aries - as someone famous once said 'Ve vill be back'!

Boulevards, Fountains and the Tango

On the first night we were in BA we enjoyed a tango evening even though we had been awake for more than twenty hours by the time we fell on our beds. But the tango show was remarkable - lively, sexy and sensuous.

Who could resist yet another such evening on our third night in BA? More importantly this experience included a tango lesson. Well with much trepidation we were collected by the shuttle bus and taken into town. We were ushered into the dance studio and our minute dance instructor introduced herself to us. Totally bilingual [Spanish and English] she proceeded to persuade the most reluctant of us onto the floor and even managed to teach us the eight basic tango steps. More importantly she even made us believe that we COULD tango. Starting with a simple walk and being harangued into stepping as though we were tango dancers, she had us moving around the studio like professionals. Such is the power of a sweet-talking confident young dancer.

After we received our first tango dance lesson certificates, we were then shown to the small theatre where we were served a most acceptable three course meal and as much to drink as we could manage. Two of the dancers walked around posing with the guests and both David and I were more than delighted to pose with our respective 'partners'. David looks just like a professional mafioso in his dark fedora and I look a little silly with a red feather boa and my leg dangling around the young man's knees. Well, when a tango dancer says to one ' up leg' in a low and sultry voice, that's what you do!

After dinner the lights dimmed and 'our' dancers opened the show with a very flashy, leg-flicking, low-slung tango. What a start to the show. The dancers move with extreme elegance and fire and sadly we realised that to get to their level of brilliance we would either have to practice daily for the next thirty years or simply give up.

Once again we were taken home and certainly I dreamed of young tango dancers and brilliant long strides across the dance floor. I certainly know exactly which my first evening will be spent the next time we arrive in Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires

But let's get back BA. What a beautiful city it is. As one drives in from the airport the large streets and magnificent boulevards are a delight to view.

Fountains and statues are placed in strategic positions and celebrate anything from [another] revolution to a donation from one country or another thanking Argentina for the hospitality or welcome shared.

We found the best way to explore was the 'hop on hop off' bus where the commentary is continuous and interesting and there are eleven stops to hop on and off and so ones sees the city highlights and can be free to hop off for a coffee or beer or even shop.

We hopped off at La Boca [the mouth - of the river] where the houses are painted bright primary colours [painted using left over boat paint] and where we wandered around cobbled streets and were fascinated by the people some who touted for photographs dressed as tango dancers.

The quality of tourist tat is good although just tat. We were astonished to see seal fur coats as part of the show.

We hopped on again after taking many photos and drove onto the Cemetery in Rocoleta which is famous for non other than Evita Duarte's grave among others. The graves are placed in as in a city with walk ways and edifices that rise out of the ground that are marble monuments to the dead.

We did have a light lunch under a large 'gum' tree which turn out to be a rubber tree and enjoyed our cold drink/beer and not the indifferent meal.

That evening we went to a tango show - but more of that later.

Back Home and 'Spinning'

No not that gym thing that everyone seems to be crazy about, but simply the spin that you feel after a remarkable expedition and you arrive back home to find: the next door neighbours have been robbed, the cat has killed a mouse - yes - in the house and there is no food in the pantry!

However that does not detract from the fact that our stay in South America was fabulous. What a great country!

In Ushuaia airport we looked like gypsies unpacking bags and re-packing gear. However, once we had convinced the flight controllers that we were not going to attempt any dire deed we were allowed onto the plane and arrived in Buenos Aires to find our pick-up non-existent and so had to take a taxi into the B&B in Rigoleta - which took two hours and not the normal 45 minutes.

When we eventually arrived at the home after many stops and mucho gracias from the driver we dumped our [very heavy] bags and had a great 'tapas' meal at the local corner cafe. A great relax after that was most welcome.

Mathe - The Gesture of Goodwill

Left the ‘Highway Hotel‘ immediately after we had eaten a fair breakfast. The receptionist was most unimpressed and rolled her eyes to great effect to which I responded with my ‘Paddington Stare’. So you can imagine who came off the worst.

We piled all our gear into the taxi and made great haste to Los Acesbos Hotel on the mountain side and which overlooks the Beagle Channel AND which has almost no traffic let alone any noise. They were delighted to have us with them again and arranged for a driver to take us up to the Lakes and moved our luggage into our room.

We then drove off with an English speaking local who proceeded to take us high into the mountains and to the magnificent lakes surrounded by high mountains and beech forests.

We bought [more] scrumptious chocolates in a small café in a town called Taluan which also has the best bakery in Ushuaia. There we were introduced to mathe which is a tea made from the sticks and leaves of a specific bush which is a social ritual in the area. The water should be 70% hot and 30% cold which is then poured over the concoction and sipped through a sieve-like straw. Shared as a friendship social opportunity everyone sips through the straw in turn as a gesture of goodwill. To the uninitiated palette the mixture tastes a little like breaking up sticks and mixing cut grass together, with some hot water [remember 70%-30%] thrown into the bowl. However it does apparently keep hunger at bay so perhaps I have discovered the next diet fad.

We had lunch overlooking one of the lakes. As always from an Argentine the meat is ‘free’ – not free as we know it, but as much food as you can eat for a set price. David had lamb and I had chicken. Of course I ended up with calefate ice cream, which was as delicious as ever.

On our way home we were to visit a Husky breeding area, but having glimpsed them on our way out we decided enough was enough and relaxed in our room overlooking the magnificent Beagle Channel. The news of an earthquake 6.5 on the Richter’s scale in the Ushuaia district was rather alarming, but as no one was hurt and our friends in the Drake Passage had a good crossing we were not too perturbed by the news.

Determined not to have an evening meal we succumbed and caught a taxi to Chez Manu which must have been one of the best meals we had ever eaten. Obviously meat is a great commodity here and should be enjoyed at every moment. David had beef, I crab [another delicacy from the Ushuaia area]. Unfortunately there was a ‘crab holding area in the restaurant and I put David on ‘crab-watch’ to ensure that one of the last two in the water was not about to be my meal. There is a happy ending – I ate one of the cousins and the one in the water lived to tell another tale.

We were driven home by an American couple who started to chat when I was taking a photo of the crabs. Of course the inevitable political questions started which confirmed our solidarity for staying in South Africa and the general ignorance of outsiders of the real South African issues – not that I am sure about any answers myself.

Travel makes me more and more aware of the transience of life and how fortunate we are to have traveled and visited the places we have.

The Beagle Channel and Ushuaia

Woke to realise the ship was moving into the harbour area already. We dressed quickly to be on deck as we arrived back into harbour.

Had a full solid breakfast with two of the expedition staff, Sean and Phil and organised our bags ready for disembarkation. As always this happens all to quickly and before we knew it we were on the pier and ready for the next stage of our journey. Who would think that all would be over in a a blink?

We arranged for a taxi to take us to our guest house which is on the Beagle Channel and although comfortable feels as though we are in the middle of a highway.

David and I decided to catch the small train which travels into the national park and was a great delight and surprise. Small engines pull the carriages on a journey which commemorates the train the prisoners were put on as they were taken to the goal in the area. [as bad as Alcatraz so they say].

With snow tipped mountains and icy streams it was a surprisingly enjoyable jaunt.

We then taxied into town and walked around buying the delicious chocolates that are made here and had a meal which was a bit disappointing as David and I think we were given incorrect food orders but the waiters were so busy and rather fierce and anyway when one has a packet of delicious chocolate as well as hot chocolate in hand who really cares?

In the afternoon we returned to the ‘garage’ hotel and relaxed a bit only to return to the travel agent to organise our Sunday. We have chosen to visit the Husky farm and the lakes further out into the countryside which will be another treat.

We watched the Clipper Adventurer steam out of the harbour at about seven this evening not without some heart pangs and once again enjoyed a spectacular meal at the restaurant overlooking the harbour where I ended the meal with palette pleasing calafate icecream.

I now write this as trucks, buses and cars trundle past the window at about midnight. The sun still glowers in the sky and hopefully we will have another spectacular weather day.

Bidding farewell to an unforgettable voyage

Weather: Seas still unsettled. During the night the ship almost jumped out of the ocean.

Lectures: from whalers to whale watchers.

Chatted to various guests and made firm contacts as a few would like to go to Greenland.

We had a fine farewell dinner with the ship anchored safely in the Beagle Channel. The sun set was colourful over the channel and the skies heavy and turbulent but the weather was fine.

The captain toasted the ship and the voyage and we had a good few moments of reflection as well as time to say our farewells to all we needed to. We find it is always better to greet everyone the night before departure as departure days are completely chaotic.

Dinner was delicious with prawns, a delicious salad, beef or meat and Baked Antarctica [not Alaska]. We sat with Eva and Morrie who will definitely be visiting us in South Africa sometime soon. A great couple, Eva is the Hotel Manager who does such a great job organising staff, meals and the dining room.

We made several toasts and everyone had a fine farewell dinner. The waiters brought in the dessert with much fun and laughter which was a fitting ending.

The Drake Passage

Weather: Sea unsettled. Rolling and rollicking.

The Drake Passage

No early wake up call and many people under the weather. Social life was very limited as most people kept to their cabins.

The ship is completely battened down and guests are not permitted onto the outside decks.

Lectures were held and David and I presented an AV on icebergs which was well received. Extremely pleased as many people are ‘professional’ photographers. Perhaps DJ will now sell his pictures or at least put them into the market.

YES we did survive the Drake passage ordeal – but what remarkable waves we endured.

Gourdin Bay

Weather: Fine overcast but chill

We had another unusual expedition onto Gourdin Bay where Weddell and Crab seals lolled on rocks and three kinds of penguins, gentoo, adele and chinstrap muddled about...

We did another zodiac cruise to try and spot a leopard seal, but had to return to the ship because of heavy seas.

At the moment we've been told that the seas are too rough for another landing and so we move onto Deception Island as we near the end of our trip. We have been told that no ships are going to South Georgia because of bad weather - so we really have been fortunate.

Weather: Fine

Brown Bluff. Iceberg zodiac expedition.

Returned from the Antarctic Peninsula – another early morning wake up and breakfast with clear skies and sunshine. Did our official landing on the Antarctic continent and now can claim that we have now had foot on all seven continents!

Did an ice-berg cruise and would love a dress in the colours that reflect from sun to sea to ice. Almost edible. The sun is shining and we are almost HOT. We sit and chat with hot chocolate in our hands and with various people in the group, most amusing. Conversations range from American football to sheep farming in Tasmania. Use your imagination to conjour up the various twangs and intonations.

We had another wonderful braai on the deck last night. Surrounded by tabular icebergs, clear skies and sunshine this must have been the most unusual braai that we have ever participated in. Caribbean music played as the staff cooked delicious meat and we helped ourselves to salads and drank gluwien from paper cups.

Our group consisted of a South African couple from Benoni, an Israeli couple and ourselves. At one stage we were doing the ‘conga’ through the tables simply to keep our feet from falling off the end of our legs. We had the staff dancing with us and we put that day down as ‘one of the best’.

Visit to Elephant and Penguin Island

Early morning start onto the Zodiacs to land at Elephant Island. This is where the survivors stayed for five months waiting for Shackleton’s rescue. We are the first expedition ship to land here this year.

Towering glaciers, ice blue is the colour description. Fine icicles drip from the edges as they drift in the ocean.

The Zodiacs move from ship very easily and return just as easily. Once back at the ship the craft are hoisted up and checked so as to be ready for the next expedition.

Surrounded by icebergs and have just heard that due to the excellent weather conditions we have changed direction and are to visit Penguin Island before going to the Antarctic Peninsula. All being well we land there after dinner this evening. Another wonderful bonus.

After dinner we were called onto the bridge to see a pod of Orcas feeding. I have only ever seen orcas in movies and Sea World in Florida. These were swimming and foraging in ocean, coming up to breathe every now and then. The ship was silent as the captain turned her around so that we could view these magnificent dolphins.

We are now waiting to go on another expedition to Penguin Island. This is another ‘bonus’ excursion. Nine o’clock at night.

What an evening. We landed on the island which was covered in snow. Weddell fur seals lay on the snow with Chinstrap and Adele penguins crouched on the ice. One or two were most curious and poddled over tilted their heads and peered at the passengers.

Back on board and after a cup of hot chocolate we are now ready to sail onto to another amazing area.

In the land of the Ice Queen

We have been sailing all day in fair weather and no swells. Apparently this is remarkable weather for the area and we are ‘doing well’.

Whales were spotted off the port side [hammmm hmmmm that is the LEFT side for all you land-lubbers out there] and they were deemed to be Fin Whales who seemed to be on an eating spree and simply foraged around the boat keeping their mind on the right things.

We are in ice-berg country. The seas abound with these huge monoliths which are a piece of history floating on the ocean. This afternoon we passed a huge berg - with penguins perched on the one surface. The captain was good enough to circle it and we had this spectacular view of turquoise ice as is tipped into the ocean with a cerulean shelf which floated just under the surface of the ocean. Imagine a ball gown in the same colour with light ruches of aquamarine and white lace peeking as the skirt swirls.

We had another great dinner with a couple from New Mexico who enjoy sea-kayaking in the remote areas of Alaska. We have some wonderful tips for our next expedition [which has to be the northern Polar areas. Well we have the gear don’t we?]. Alaska and Greenland here we come!

We hope for an early start tomorrow as we are forging ahead so rapidly. The captain has to slow down because the weather is so good [can you believe it?] and we are approaching Elephant Island too quickly. This is the island that Shackleton and his men arrived at after their escape from the ice shelf after their ship broke up and sank. This is the place too, where the men remained for five months while Shackelton went to find assistance to get them all back home.

We will probably only have a Zodiac ride as there is little beach for landing, but as you know that is good enough for me!

Hopefully the captain will keep good watch in the next few days, as this is the land of the Ice Queen and many icebergs and much pack ice lies around and before us.

After a long night’s sleep, we are now steaming ahead to the Antarctic peninsula.

Some facts and figures about Antarctica

Ice Terminology

Anchor Ice: Submerged ice which is attached to the sea bottom.
Bergy Bit: A piece of floating ice rising between 1 to 5 meters above the water.
Brash Ice: The remains of large pieces of ice crashing into each other and forming a large heaping pile.
Fast Ice: Sea ice attached to the shore or between grounded ice bergs.
Frazil Ice: Needle-shaped ice crystals that form a icy slush in the water.
Grease Ice: The stage at which the water gets a matte looking appearance when its between freezing and frazil ice.
Hummock: An area where ice floes have rafted or piled up on top of each other, often reaching heights several yards.
Ice Blink: A lighter section underneath the clouds which indicates reflecting light off the ice below. This technique was used by many early explorers to help steer them away from ice packs.
Ice Window: The short summer season when the fast ice has broken away to allow ships to come close to the Antarctic coastline.
Lead: A section of open water within pack ice and large ice floes.
Nilas: Thin crust of floating ice that bends in the waves, but does not break. The darker in appearance, the thinner the nilas is.
Pancake Ice: Discs of young ice, formed when waves jostle them against each other rounding their edges.
Tide Crack: A crack between sea ice and the shoreline. This crack is caused by the rise and fall of the tide and is usually to wide to cross safely.

Of Greykviten and Gluwein

We had a relax after our shore excursion. Well to be honest I had a snooze while DJ played with his remarkable images. He has been able to capture magnificent wildlife photos and I cannot wait for you to see them. The animals, similar to The Galapagos, simply sit and do what is natural for them. So in comparison [and I know that is not fair] to African wildlife image taking this offers more opportunities to obtain more photos.

We spent the whole afternoon in Greytviken – the whaling station. But before that we have officially seen our first ice-berg – larger than a grand piano. So we are officially [I suppose] in South Polar country.

A barbeque arranged for the evening turned into such fun. Arranged on the Lido deck [no swimming pool in sight]the view was as different from a South African braai that you could get. Icebergs on the horizon, steep cliffs nearby and a small museum whale village on shore. The staff is always so helpful and certainly full of fun. I have found a ‘fellow Indian’ who on making a chance remark about the area being similar to Kashmir, became an instant pal and when he mentioned that he lived just outside Dharamsala we were instantly related.

The staff began setting up the evening function on the deck early afternoon and as always everything was set and done for our return. Caribbean music played, more food than you can consume [anything from sausage to prawns] great salads. Gluwein was the drink of the evening which was quaffed by all the passengers.

The community of the Greykviten joined us [all fifteen of them] and preceded to enjoy themselves talking amongst the passengers and enjoying the companionship expedition ships provide – although apparently it is not a given that they are invited on board.

Many of the people on shore are contracted for more than two years. I suspect they find it extremely difficult to fit back into the humdrum home life in England. One young person is doing research on the breeding patterns of the King penguin – and hopes to return for a second term and stay on the even more remote Bird Island for a further two years.

The search for ice-bergs begins

Obviously when St Andrews Bay was on the agenda both David and I needed little impetus to go on the excursion even though it was an early [very early] wake up call. We had three landings yesterday - the last one being the whaling station that Shackleton arrived at after his epic check. Similar to the Namibian Elizabeth Bay and Kolmanskop the buildings were stark and forlorn.

We often have a late supper and are up with an early morning call to commence darting from here to there. I usually choose to stay about an hour and a half to two hours on at the landing areas. David has to be gaffed off the beaches as he, together with a few other 'intrepid' photographers and the artist, leave only on the last Zodiac. I come back, tidy up and sit in the library or fore-lounge [it's like being on your own private yacht with everyone else on an excursion] and write and enjoy a cup of 'well-deserved] hot chocolate [even though it IS rather too]. However, if anyone thinks we are on holiday, think again - the up side of all this high activity is that I am fitter than I have been for a while. So my dearest children should beware - I might take them on later this year!

I also enjoy visiting the Bridge. It is always silent up there with the captain discussing position and weather conditions with the crew and all in all a formal, busy silence pervades. One of the other things I love is the Zodiac rides. So every now and again I beg an extra ride or two and often get a tour of the bay we are visiting as well.

On our way back to the ship [which was a few kilometres today]. We had a glimpse of our first [very small] iceberg and as we head down south they will obviously become more obvious. [Hope the captain knows this]. The small ones are called "growlers", being the sound they make as they scrape the side of the ship. [GULP]

Breakfast is served soon and with my stomach growling as the icebergs do. I had better go and get some food.

We are on the ocean...

We are on the ocean – sailing in weather that [quote one crew member] is as good as it gets! The sun is shining and the ocean, while not steady-steady, is rolling steadily.

Before boarding yesterday we visited the Ushuaia National Park and were able to walk along board walks.

We viewed geese, still lakes, clear glacier filled rivers and the mountains of Chile and Argentina .

I sent a postcard from the most southerly post office, where the post master saw us arrive and zipped over in a Zodiac to do his duty. We had our passports stamped with his special stamp – all at a cost of course.

After an easy boarding, we were shown into our compact cabin from a drizzly and wet Ushuaia we were given a very brief briefing after which we went on deck and were nearly swept away by cheeky biting wind. Our bright yellow parkas will ensure that we will be visible on the ice and kept warm at the same time.

David had given me some medication for anti sea-sickness which made me float around the galleys like an albatross. Sitting chatting to David through the evening meal was a dream-like experience, not because I was mesmerised by his scintillating conversation, but because I was totally out of things!

I do not know if I undressed to sleep, but woke this morning still ‘out of it’ and eschewed any further of DJ’s ‘magic muti’! I did manage to dislodge the shower soap as I manoeuvred myself in the shower area, but after a hearty breakfast of cereal, eggs and smoked salmon I have recovered enough to walk on deck without fear of diving off the edge and now sit in the lounge surrounded by the crew and some fellow passengers, all of whom I look at and hope to goodness that they are competent enough to lead us through and crisis we might encounter.

The guests as always for me are almost more interesting than the wildlife.

We have ‘The Birders’ who, even though there are only ‘x’ number of birds to identify at any given spot, argue, dissect and ponder the siting. The conversations always end up with one of the ‘spotters sighing – ‘well, yes, yes, it has the eye-stripe so it must be the……………albatross.’

We then have ‘The Experts’, those who have been on an Antarctic cruise before where on the previous ship the food was better, the lecturers more erudite and the passage smoother. For me the passage so far has been smooth and fab and that’s good enough for me.

We also have the ‘team players’. Many Australians who have their green and yellow shirts on with kangaroos bounce about. The Israelis who talk ‘big’ and secretly and the Brits who put on the accent and treat everyone else like colonials. This lot may well set another sortie when they land on the Falklands.

Don’t let’s even talk about ‘The Photographers’ who discuss aperture, light and focus until all have disappeared into a cloud of grey.

The internet here is dodgy, with the satellite being behind the funnel, no one being cheeky enough to request that the captain turn the vessel for easier internet access. David has arrived with a cup of hot chocolate. I feel more ‘in the moment’ again...

From Johannesburg to Ushuaia

Greetings!

As I sit and write I look over Beagle Bay, mountains covered in snow and forests and know that we are at the furthest inhabited place on earth.

After a wonderful Christmas filled with the warmth of family and friends we were ready to leave for our Antarctic trip. From the moment we said good bye to our family after our now traditional 'group hug' we were ready to GO!

Elizabeth loaded us off at the airport in good time and from that moment, to when we arrived in Ushuaia we have not stopped being utterly amazed by the excitement and privilege of this adventure.

We had an easy check in at ORT - notwithstanding the fact that three [yes 3] international SAA flights were being checked in at the same time, at the same place. We were fortunate enough to be pushed ahead - perhaps our aged looks are finally being taken into account - and instead of waiting in line for another hour, we managed a fairly easy transfer, although I had checked in online the previous night, so perhaps that did help.

We had perfect seats and although we had two young children near us and one baby down the aisle, who objected loudly using great strength of lungs as we took off, our day flight to Argentina was fairly unexciting. Despite the enforced sleep pattern determined by the airline staff ["close the shutters until we tell you it is time to re-open" - I now know what the hyacinth bulbs we force in spring feel like] the plane flight pattern was so stable we barely felt we were moving.

Our pick up service was waiting for us as we walked through customs and we were whizzed through the beautiful wide and fairly empty Boulevard streets of a Sunday Buenos Aires. It seems that all drivers in Argentina drive as though they were driving Important People – so the maximum speed is used while passengers hold on to hand luggage and themselves as they are whirled around corners.

After a friendly welcome to the guest house we relaxed for what seemed like a few moments when the taxi from the Tango venue arrived to collect us. We were up and out within ten minutes changed and ready for a great evening, although for an hour or so my eyes felt as though they were still in South Africa.

We enjoyed a delicious meal. The waiter looked at me with raised eye-brows when I said that I was not happy to taste the Beef, but would be happy to try the trout. David enjoyed a meat pasty as a starter, which he declared good and noted that the eagerly awaited Beef was well worth the journey. For those of you who enjoy Gelati - I voted the ice-cream delicious.

At about ten o'clock we were escorted across the road to the Tango show - El Viejo Almacien - which was as exciting as we hoped it to be. The dancers [although very familiar with their routine] certainly did not allow the fire and drama of the dance to falter. The sultry sexiness of the movements were dramatic and exquisite. The dancers were beautiful and the evening was well worth the late night return.

Our early morning trek to the domestic airport took us through beautiful wide streets, past the race course to see to glimpse some horses on a training canter. We met up with some other South Africans who are also on the Quark tour. After a three hour flight we arrived in Ushuaia. Our hotel in is in the forests above the town and looks over the Beagle Channel.

For those of you who recall that programme set in Alaska in that funky small town with the interesting people who were all a little off the wall and the funky radio station and moose walking through the roads, this is very similar. Except here, instead of Inuits we have native Indians and odd eyed husky dogs. Most intriguing.

We had lunch at a cosy restaurant called Tant Sara where I sipped hot chocolate and David had a stout named after – yes you have guessed it The Beagle! As my eyes skirted through the menu I saw: mozzarella lolly pops, penguin choc lollies, cheese tarts and calafate ice-cream. Fascinating stuff!

We have been briefed for the tour and find that there are 8 South Africans with us. It is so very strange to be at the places we have read about for so long and although there is mail on the boat I am not sure when next I can update you.

As we walked through the town this afternoon we decided that we had just experienced a ‘Penguin’s Wedding’. Remember the monkeys wedding of our childhood - rain and sunshine? Well, we encountered snow and sunshine instead.

We board the ship at 16h00 tomorrow [Tuesday] afternoon for our great adventure. We are ready to go to a restaurant in town called Maria Lola. As I sign off at eight o’clock in the evening with no glimmer of sunset, I look at the clock on my Mac see that it is 00:58 in South Africa. I now understand why the curtains are such a heavy brocade.

Antarctica

We celebrated Christmas with our family and spent this warm summer's day relaxing and enjoying the heat. As a reminder for the moments in Antarctica when I wonder what on earth we are doing there!

We've bought the gear, packed the cases and David has loaded the cameras. I have 'Whispered' my books onto my Kindle and packed paints and books. Now all we need to do is board the plane for Buenos Aires on Sunday.

We then spend the night in Palermo on BA and fly to Ushuaia to board the Clipper Adventurer the next day for our 20 day excursion in Antarctica. I am excited and and daunted by the forthcoming adventure.

I will try to keep our travel notes throughout the trip.

The launch of the Creative Escapes brochures is always a great function. Some of the participants of the previous workshops and tours join us as well as many friends - so it is always a jolly occasion.

About 50 guests arrived and were treated to a wine tasting by Nick Diemont of Strandveld wines. The white wine Adamastor was a great hit - reminding some of us of our matric years and Roy Campbell's poetry.

Small tastes of food were served and to the delight of many Helen made her delicious chocolate brownies.

The evening ended with a few of us around the table eating leftovers and reminiscing about the great times we've shared in 2009.

Morocco

Ssalâmo 'alîkom,

David and I have just returned from another wonderful adventure. This time Morocco was our destination. Nine of us toured the country in a bus with ample stops for photographers and shopping enough to satisfy the most intrepid bargain hunter.

Morocco is a vast country filled with diverse terrain from the shores of Casablanca, to the sands of the Sahara desert and the flurry of the souks of Fes and Marrakech.

We crossed the dunes on camels and spent a night under the full moon surrounded by the silence of the desert. We were bullied by store keepers in the souks and learned to haggle back in true Moroccan fashion. We shared meals and moments that will be engraved our minds forever. The people are interesting. The food exotic. The photography special.

Yes - we plan to visit there again in 2011.

New sounds, perfumes and people. A new culture and a whole new experience - story tellers and mint tea. What a combination!

Masai Mara 2009 -Memories

Greetings Rafikii [and yes that really does mean friends]

We returned last night from a magnificent stay at Breezes Beach hotel on the Zanzibar coast and the Zanzibar Serena Hotel in Stonetown which overlooks the ocean. These resorts boast people and service that rival Kichwa.

We began our trip on Kenya Air at the early hours of Saturday morning and arrived in Nairobi to be welcomed by our friend George of Custom Safaris and Eliud together with Ole and ???. We had breakfast at my favourite shopping centre in Nairobi, The Junction - think beautiful leather bags and exceptional Kenyan coffee. A good stopover before our trip to Lake Nakuru.

We had a great time at Sarova Lion Hill where we viewed the masses of flamingo around the very depleted lake. We were made very aware of the severe drought Kenya is suffering. The Maasai are driving their cattle from north to south in the attempt to find pasture. [Golf courses are not excluded here].

On the Sunday morning we drove to Lake Naivasha to board the planes for the Mara. There I was entertained by a little boy who tried to each me to count in Swahili and shook his head vehemently every time I intoned the wrong word. [Yes I did nearly bring him home].

David and I think this is our best ever Masai Mara tour. We experienced yet again one of the Wonders of Nature. The wildebeest thrived in the Mara. One of our guests told us 'they're all gone'. Not possible I thought. Well they had left - it rained a little on the Serengeti plains, so they trekked to pastures greener.

But being the fickle and instinct driven creatures that they are, the wildebeest returned. Not one thousand, not two thousand, but millions. They dotted the hills, climbed the ridges, cantered across the plains, crossed the Mara river. Unravelled before us in dust filled moments. The migration took place in front of our eyes.

But the Masai Mara is not all about the migration. We were privileged to see leopard stalking and lazing. The yellow eyed contact is extremely daunting. We viewed jackal as they eased a baby gazelle from its mother. We witnessed the introduction of two cubs to the pride. We watched lionesses set up the pride for a kill. And we were surrounded by wildebeest.

To mention our friends at Kichwa Tembo is like talking about family - from the general manager, camp manager, rangers and sweepers guests are welcomed as family. The staffs' exceptional dedication and warmth simply make the stay more special than expected and the departure more difficult each year. To say Kwaheri [good bye] and seeing a young warrior out of the corner of your eye, with his head bent in sadness, rents a hole in the heart.

David is viewing photographs on his computer and from the glimpses I've had, we will have some great memories.

Masai Mara 2009

Well, two weeks before we leave for our annual pilgrimage to Kenya.

Our drivers are ready and we leave on 29 August with a group of 17 people which is great. We arrive in Nairobi and drive to Lake Nakuru where we will relax for a day before going onto the Mara.

Once again I am sure we will be welcomed to the camp and will begin our safari with excellent guides and drivers.

David and I then go off to Zanzibar where will be relax for a while on the coast and then drive onto Stone Town where the serious photography begins again.

Tanzania

We have returned from a remarkable tour to Tanzania. Eight of us took the Kenya Air flight to Kenya with transit in Nairobi to Arusha.

Well I say 8 - with one couple not realising that we had to be at the airport on Friday night to leave in the early hours of Saturday. No wonder I don't do gym!

Once everyone was settled we arrived in Arusha to be met by David and Eluid who would be out drivers and guides for the following days.

What a time we had - from Lake Manyara to Serengeti [where grasslands cover horizon to horizon and where we did see the wildebeest migration begin going back into the Mara.

We had great sightings of leopard - so close that one of our passengers cold almost touch her.

Photography was challenging, but David captured some wonderful images.

We are now in the final stages of the Masai Mara planning with George of custom safaris and Shiko of andBeyond. Another wonderful adventure awaits.

Namibia and Cosmos

Bit of an odd title, but this is to update on our recent journeys.

We had a remarkable time in Namibia. Roads straight and well kept. Few people [only about 1.2 million people in the country] and great photographic opportunities.

David and I attended the Desert Light workshop organised by Lydia Ellis and presented by Willem Oets and Nicole Palmer. I was a non-photographic participant and had a wonderful time reading and at times watching the beautiful audio visuals. David had a great time indulging in photography from pre-dawn to late night.

But we also visited Luderitz, Elizabeth Bay and Kolmanskop beforehand. Other wonderful photos were taken by David in that environment.

We stayed at some great lodges and re-visited Kulala Lodge which is one of our favourite places to stay. Great views of the desert and fine accommodation.

We had our first Creative Escapes weekend for 2009 at the end of March. With beautiful cosmos to photograph and a visit to Lesotho, all the delegates had a splendid weekend.

The next Creative Escapes weekend is at the end of April - the Autumn Wonders of the Eastern Free State.

Namibia Trek

Well here we are, ready to trek and explore again. We can't remember when last we went to Namibia, but we are packed and raring to go. We have purchased the recommended shade cloth to protect the radiator from the grass seeds in Namibia - so we will experience a wonderful new aspect of the country.

David is attending a photographic workshop - Desert Light - with Willem Oets, Nicole Palmer and Lydia Ellis which promises to be a marvelous opportunity. I have packed a library of books, a small AppleMac computer and my enthusiasm for writing. So it seems that both of us will have a grand time.

At the end of the month we hold our first Creative Escapes weekend workshop for 2009 - Cosmos in Fouriesburg. The Cosmos fields look promising, so watch this space for updated details in the next few weeks.

And a start to a busy and exciting year.

Our first course is on the 22 February which happens to be on the day of the South African Grand Prix. Just shows how we follow that programme!

The first outing is in Fouriesburg Eastern Free State from 27 - 29 March. We will have an excursion into Lesotho, a poet - Ruth Everson and an artist John Moore, as well as various photographers. So it should be an exciting and entertaining weekend.

Our website is being re-designed by Elizabeth, so we are very excited by the thought of a new look for the new year.

Our workshops and tours are booking very nicely - a great relief as always.

We have just received a wonderful booking for the Masai Mara tour in August 2009. We will be visiting Lake Nakuru as well - where the greatest mass of flamingoes can be viewed. It is most strange to see rhino, water buck and buffalo grazing with millions of birds feeding behind them.

Hogsback

David and I have just returned from another great excursion, this time in Hogsback. I attended a poetry retreat with four Wizards of Words. Brian Walker, Dorian Haarhoff, Bob Commin, Father Cathal.

We stayed at The Edge where we stayed in a self-catering cottage called 'Fire-Fly' which overlooked the valley and natural forests of the area.

Every day the four aspiring poets met with the four professionals for inspiration, direction and writing time.

David indulged in an orgy of photography and joined us afternoon and evening for meals and discussions.

Must end now - have a poem surfacing.

Ponto

Ponto d'Ouro must be one of the most beautiful spots along the coast.

The beautiful beaches and varying activities are remarkable. David and I stayed in a time share unit which was comfortable with a view of the sea. We ate prawns, calamari, ocean-fresh fish and prawn-cakes everyday, with copious amounts of wine and beer [and dare I say it Diet Coke] to ward off the terrible thirsts you get in Ponto.

We experienced everything from R&R's [rum, ice and raspberry Sparletta] to shooters at anytime of the day and night. As I recall my mother and father had 'liquers' after dinner with coffee. Here they are available in and unending supply.

We walked along the beach. Explored the coast line. Snoozed and socialized. We boated out to view the dolphins - here my angels were working overtime as fortunately we were unable to swim with them because they had young. We did see flying fish, tuna churning the waves and a phantom whale.

And then, did I tell you about........but I nearly forgot, what happens in Ponto, stays in Ponto.

We are now preparing to travel to Hogsback where I shall indulge my passion - writing and poetry. No doubt David will use his new 50D and will explore the area as I hope to explore the written word.

CE-October workshop Fouriesburg

We have packed and are ready to travel to the Eastern Free State again for another Creative Escapes workshop weekend.

Jeremy and Kim Jacobs will join us for the Spiritual weekend. We hope to have a quiet, contemplative time.

We arrive back in Johannesburg on Sunday and then head to Limpopo for the PSSA photographic congress at Magoebaskloof which should be great fun.

Workshops and Weekends

David is slowly working through the thousands of photos taken in the Mara in preparation for the Creative Escapes 2009 brochure launch on 26 October at C3 9 Caroline Crescent Cresta.

We also have a photographic workshop on the same day from 10h00 to 16h00 followed by the launch at 17h00. Jenny Harrison of Finesse wines will hold a wine tasting. A few short shows on our trips this past year will also be shown. And of course, food and wine for all.

We drive to the Free State over the weekend of 10-12 October for the Spiritual Moment workshop which should be good.

Other travel plans include Mpumalanga, Mozambique and the Eastern Cape. That all before the end of the year.

Masai Mara Moments

We have just returned from another wonderful trip to Kenya.

As always we landed at JKI and over-nighted at the Mayfair Hotel in Nairobi. The Kenyans are friendly and helpful [something which our service industry here could learn from].

We then flew into the Mara where we were greeted in fine fashion by all at Kichwa Tembo. Coffee and eats on the airstrip, hugs and pats on the backs by the rangers and warm smiles all round.

The sightings we experienced can only be described as exceptional. If last year was the time of birds, this year was the time of mating lions - so there will be many cubs next year!

The wildebeest were scarce. We saw few crossings, but those we were privileged to view were sensational.

David's images get better every year and once edited will be put onto our website: www.creative-escapes.co.za.

The exceptional rangers added to the Mara experience. Their knowledge and concern for the well-being of the client cannot be empahsised enough. From tent custodian to to chef, management to ranger, we cannot speak highly enough of their people skills.

Kichwa Tembo is a beautiful tented camp on the edge of the Mara conservancy. Near enough to drive in for early morning drives, far enough to be out of the madding crowd.

We ballooned, had lunch in the bush, viewed game and of course re-established our friendships.

The group we took had fun and 'the experience of a lifetime'. So did we [again].

We also visited Lake Nakuru which was beautiful and peaceful.

We return exhausted but delighted by our travels in Kenya.

Every year at this time David and I do our annual pilgrimage to visit the plains of the Masai Mara.

We look forward to the sheer joy of leaving frenetic Johannesburg for the bustle of Nairobi and vast plains of the Mara. The teeming herds of game flow through the grass and continue their annual progression to cross the rivers. Emotive moments are shared by all who experience this natural marvel.

David and I share wonderful times with our Kenyan friends. I love to sit in the Landy, chat to Benson, draw, write and ponder while the photographers snap away. We leave on Saturday and will once again be able to absorb the vastness of the African plains.

The question is - how many books do you pack??

Kenya and the Masai Mara

We fly to Kenya on Saturday 30 August for our annual pilgrimage to view the wildebeest migration. Each year is special. Each year is different.

The Mara always surprises and delights. Whether it is the vast numbers of animals or the beauty of the landscapes after a rain storm we are always spell bound by the area.

Of course we look forward to taking the group on a new experience. We have a full tour - 32 people. Each group of six has its own driver - ranger who is an expert on the area. The guests are treated as friends and all leave having experienced a wonderful time.

David and I look forward to seeing our friends in Nairobi and the Mara and particularly Kichwa Tembo camp on the edge of the Mara conservancy.

We look forward to another wonderful Mara trip. Mahali pazuri - a good place indeed.

CE August workshop

We have about three day workshops a year. David presents aspects of photography. Because we are 'on the way to the Mara' the day was filled with tips and pointers for wild-life photography.

In the evening we had our pre Mara get-together. About 22 of our guests joined us and we had a great inter-active evening with slides, questions and laughter. A great way to prepare for another Kenyan adventure.

Good food, wine and great company - a marvelous way to end the weekend.

This weekend we drive to our stone cottage in the Eastern Free State. I'm not a great traveling companion as I fall asleep just after we leave the Toll Gate. So no 'scintillating' conversation for us until just before Villiers.

I always find car travel comforting. It rekindles memories of childhood holidays and early morning starts. Thankfully we don't do much of that anymore - unless we're in the bush of course, but that's a different time altogether. David will be out before the crack of dawn, hoping for mist in the valley and a murky sunrise.

So I'll pack a pile of books and put them next to my chair on the veranda and enjoy a few days of quiet.

With David on duty and the little girls not visiting and Elizabeth re-organising her routine I had the whole weekend to catch up with creative projects.

Completed my small India travel book. Updated the Masai Mara one. We leave on our annual migration at the end of August. We still have 4 places left.

Sadly one of our friends, Hassan, Kichwa Tembo camp manager passed away last week. He had been ill for many years and we will miss his quiet presence.

I did manage to explore [through the wonderful world wide web] new destinations for Creative Escapes. David and I are in deep discussion about our 2009 and 2010 excursions. I look forward to sharing these with you once they are finalised.
